Lead-based paint
Definition
Paint containing lead pigment, common in houses built before 1978, when residential use was banned in the United States. It is often present under newer coats on older wood siding, trim and windows.
Why It Matters
Sanding or scraping lead paint releases lead dust, so repainting a pre-1978 house changes how the prep has to be done and contained. Tell the painter the age of the house when you call so the job can be planned for it.
Simple Example
A 1930s house in Reno's Old Southwest or a railroad-era house in Sparks: assume lead may be under the top coats until tested.
