Skim coating
Definition
Applying a thin layer of joint compound or plaster over a whole wall to level it and hide texture, patches or damage before painting.
Why It Matters
Older walls with layers of patches, removed wallpaper or heavy texture do not paint well as they are. A skim coat gives a uniform surface so the paint finish looks even under raking light.
Simple Example
A Fallon farmhouse dining room with decades of patched plaster is skim-coated, sanded, primed and painted.
