Bonding primer
Definition
A primer formulated to stick to surfaces that ordinary paint will not hold to well: chalked paint, glossy or slick coatings, previously painted metal, and cabinet finishes.
Why It Matters
Most exterior paint failures on repainted houses come from paint applied over chalk or over an old glossy coat without a bonding primer. It is a small part of the cost of the job and most of the reason the job lasts.
Simple Example
A 1990s house in Caughlin Ranch on its third repaint: the previous coat is peeling in sheets where it went over chalk. This time the chalk is washed off and a bonding primer goes on before the colour.
